Surah An Nas Tafseer: In Depth Understanding With Quranic References

In this blog post, we will delve into the profound message of Surah An-Nas, the 114th chapter in the Quran. We will explore the Tafsir of Surah An Nas, providing verse-by-verse translations and insights, along with relevant Quranic references.

Surah An Nas Tafseer and Translation:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Bismillah hir rahman nir raheem

English & Urdu Translation:

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Verse 1:

Qul a’oozu birabbin naas

English & Urdu Translation:

Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,

Tafseer:

The Surah opens with Allah commanding His Prophet (PBUH) to seek refuge with The Lord, or in Arabic, Al-Rabb of mankind. Al-Rabb is one of Allah’s 99 names, and He asserts that the Lord of the heavens and the earth will be there for anyone who seeks refuge in Him. Allah Says in Surah al-falaq:

“ Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak’’

– Surah al-falaq (113:1)

Verse 2:

 Malikin naas

English & Urdu Translation:

The Sovereign of mankind.

Tafseer:

Allah further asserts that He is always there for mankind to seek refuge in Him by adding another one of His names: The King, or Al-Malik. Allah says in Surah Al-Mulk that:

“Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent.’’

– Surah Al-Mulk (67:1)

Verse 3:

Ilaahin naas

English & Urdu Translation:

The god of mankind.

Tafseer:

Allah gives humans another reason to turn to Him: He is The God, or Al-Ilah of mankind. Allah says in Surah al-ikhlas:

Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.’

Surah al-ikhlas (112:1-4)

Verse 4:

Min sharril waswaasil khannaas

English & Urdu Translation:

From the evil of the sneaking whisperer,

Tafseer:

In this Ayah, Shaytaan is referred to as “the sneaking whisperer”, because he tempts mankind to commit sins by secretly whispering evil thoughts to us. Allah is the Only Power that can protect mankind from Shaytaan. In Surah An-Nahl Allah says that:

“Indeed, he has no authority over those who believe and rely upon their Lord.’’

–  Surah An-Nahl (16:99)

Verse 5:

Allazee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin naas

English & Urdu Translation:

Who whispereth in the hearts of mankind,

Tafseer:

Once again, it is stated that Shaytaan whispers in the hearts of mankind, implying that he does not openly come in front of us but surreptitiously misleads us. In Surah An-Naml, It is said that:

“I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah, and Satan has made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from [His] way, so they are not guided.”

– Surah An-Naml (27:24)

Verse 6:

Minal jinnati wannaas

English & Urdu Translation:

Of the jinn and of mankind.

Tafseer:

This Ayah of Surah an nas can be interpreted in two different ways, following the previous Ayah. The first way is that Shaytaan whispers in the hearts of men and jinn, whereas the second interpretation can be that the Shayateen (evil ones) amongst men and jinn whisper in the hearts of other men and jinn, to mislead or misguide them. In Surah Al-A’raf, Allah says that:

“And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

Surah Al-A’raf (7:179)
