Laa a’budu maa ta’budoon
Say, “O disbelievers
This opening verse sets the tone for the entire surah. Allah commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to directly address those who reject faith, establishing a clear boundary between belief and disbelief. The word “kafiroon” (disbelievers) refers not only to those who deny the existence of God but also to those who ascribe partners to Him.

Qul yaa ayyuhal-kaafiroon
I do not worship what you worship
This verse is a firm declaration of the Prophet’s rejection of idol worship and polytheism. It stresses the worship of the One True God and the worship of false deities.

Sahih International

“And if they deny you, [O Muhammad], then say, “For me are my deeds, and for you are your deeds. You are disassociated from what I do, and I am disassociated from what you do.”

Surah Yunus (10:41)

Wa laa antum ‘aabidoona maa a’bud
Nor are you worshippers of what I worship
This verse further solidifies the distinction between the two faiths. It highlights the fundamental differences in their beliefs and practices, stressing that worship cannot be compromised.

As Mentioned in Quran:

“Say: ‘Surely my Prayer, all my acts of worship, and my living and my dying are for Allah alone, the Lord of the whole universe. He has no associate. Thus have I been bidden, and I am the foremost of those who submit themselves (to Allah)”

Surah Al-An’am (6:162-163)

Wa laa ana ‘aabidum maa ‘abattum
Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship
The verse highlights the Prophet’s unwavering belief in one God and his refusal to compromise this belief, even when facing significant challenges.

As Mentioned in Quran:

“And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said to his father Azar, “Do you take idols as deities? Indeed, I see you and your people to be in manifest error”

Surah Al-An’am (6:74)

Wa laa antum ‘aabidoona maa a’bud
Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.
This verse firmly declares the difference in faith between the Prophet Muhammad and those who rejected his message. It emphasizes the Prophet’s rejection of their false gods and his unwavering belief in one God, Allah.

Lakum deenukum wa liya deen
For you is your religion, and for me is my religion
The verse indicates a finality in the separation of paths. It suggests that the Prophet (peace be upon him) has delivered the message, and now it is up to the disbelievers to make their own choices, for which they will be held responsible.

As Mentioned in Quran:

“And if they reject you as false, tell them: ‘My deeds are for myself and your deeds for yourselves. You will not be held responsible for my deeds, nor I for your deeds”

Surah Yunus (10:41)
